Our client, an AI-powered fintech company, has exclusively retained Solutus Legal in its search for an Associate General Counsel. As the second attorney at the company, reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel, this attorney will be a central partner in driving the Company’s business goals as they scale and continue to establish themselves as the leading trusted partner for both financial institutions and consumers.

 

The AGC will play an instrumental role in the Company’s expansion into new product lines, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Ops, Compliance, and Sales teams. They will be a generalist who is comfortable quickly becoming an expert in a heavily regulated industry, working across teams, and context shifting in a fast-paced environment. The AGC will help shape the Company’s legal culture and how they integrate creative, forward-thinking legal solutions in their business decisions and growth strategies.

 

Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Championing Legal as an accelerant: Bringing a creative, solution-oriented approach to your work. Your role will play a central part in ensuring the Company’s legal approaches go beyond compliance and demonstrate innovation, paving the way for their entry into new product lines and geographies.
  • Navigating regulatory complexity: Developing a deep understanding of the Company’s regulatory landscape to inform their risk philosophy and proactively guide their business, compliance, and technical teams as they navigate relevant laws and regulations.
  • Establishing excellence in product counseling: You’ll support the Company’s Product and Engineering teams as they develop new products and expand into new business lines, moving roadblocks and providing practical and actionable advice that’s rooted in creativity, ethics, and a growth mindset.
  • Making commercial transactions seamless: Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating sales and vendor agreements, identifying opportunities for growth and commercial advantage.
  • Creating scalable legal processes: Designing and implementing scalable legal processes that grow alongside the team and business, including in product counseling, contract processes, and litigation management.
  • Helping build a world-class Legal team: Helping design and build a Legal team to support the Company’s growth.

 

Requirements/Skills:

 

  • 5-8 years of experience in a legal role in a high-growth startup environment; experience in a regulated industry preferred.
  • Strong experience working closely with product and engineering teams, providing critical legal insights that shape product strategy and development
  • Comfort acting in a generalist capacity and managing a variety of legal areas, including product counseling, commercial contract review, and litigation management
  • Demonstrated ability to align legal expertise with commercial objectives, and adept in legal aspects of product innovation and market expansion
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate effectively in the ambiguous and rapidly changing environment of a growing startup
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
  • A proactive, hands-on approach, ready to engage directly with various aspects of our business

 

The current targeted base salary for this position ranges from $230K – $250K, plus equity. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and years of directly relevant experience. The company is located in New York with a three+ day a week in-office requirement.
