Our client, an integrated family office serving the investments, activities and foundations of its founders and their family, is seeking to add a Director, Data Privacy to its legal team. The entities associated with our client employ over 500 employees, ranging from foundation staff, program managers, investment professionals, finance and accounting staff, property managers, pilots, sailors, scientists, and a diverse range of other individuals. Our client is the corporate manager and provider of centralized shared services for these entities and employees.

This is a unique role for someone who is process oriented and excited to build and scale internal processes, documentation & systems. The ideal candidate can identify and solve legal and business issues efficiently, drive projects and earn the confidence of partners across the organization. They thrive at solving problems and have a willingness to learn, commit and contribute to solving for immediate and long-term solutions. Alignment with team ethos of ownership mentality, making an impact, curiosity, collegiality and communication is critical. 


  • Program Design and Operation
    • Establish and run a comprehensive privacy program that addresses both business-to-consumer and employer-to-employee interactions across all entities
    • Build systems and procedures to detect, investigate, respond to, and report (where warranted) security incidents and/or inappropriate access to or disclosure of information
    • Create a system for handling data subject requests through appropriate submission pathways, internal procedures, and coordination with data processors / joint controllers
  • Policies and Procedures
    • Maintain internal and public-facing notices, policies and procedures that ensure globally compliant and exemplary privacy practices
    • Apply consistent privacy principles organization-wide, while tailoring entity-specific policies and procedures to their unique circumstances and needs
    • Maintain appropriate access restrictions and controls across business, legal, IT and HR systems
    • Create and enforce data retention and data minimization policies
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Communicate routinely with stakeholders throughout the organization – including legal, business, and IT – regarding their practices, needs, and relevant aspects of the privacy program
    • Collaborate with Chief Information Officer and Director of Information Security to align privacy program with IT systems, and implement suitable technical and organizational security measures
    • Involve entity leaders in important design and implementation discussions to maximize privacy program efficacy and adoption
    • Conduct routine internal privacy trainings to key stakeholder groups
    • Advocate for and promote the privacy program and privacy best practices throughout the organization
  • Counseling and Privacy-By-Design
    • Provide counseling and support for initiatives involving the processing of personal data
    • Help program operations staff and product managers implement privacy-by-design principles
  • Documentation and Risk Management
    • Create data maps and inventories across entities, systems, and groups
    • Establish and maintain records of processing activities, legal bases of processing, and purpose limitations
    • Conduct and update legitimate interests balancing assessments
    • Conduct impact assessments as appropriate, and implement mitigations and remediation where needed
  • Contracts and Data Transfers
    • Create and maintain data processing agreement templates for global and jurisdiction-specific uses
    • Audit existing service provider agreements for data privacy compliance and execute or amend data processing agreements as needed
    • Create a process for review of inbound and outbound data transfers to ensure compliant data sharing and cross-border data transfers
    • Ensure that contracts involving personal data contain consistent and robust privacy provisions
  • Procurement and Vendor Management
    • Procure and implement privacy software / service solutions as needed
    • Manage outside counsel, privacy vendors, and others who support the privacy program
  • Legal Expertise and Thought Leadership
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of privacy and data breach notification laws worldwide, as well as requisite privacy certifications and training
    • Stay current on public policy and legislative activities on new privacy and data security laws
    • Liaise with federal and state regulators, attorneys general, and data protection authorities as needed to meet compliance obligations, respond to inquiries, or support thought leadership work (below)
    • Engage in thought leadership in the privacy space and work with academics, industry groups, regulators, and/or advocacy groups to promote or support cross-functional collaborations

Required Skills

  • Law degree and active Bar membership
  • Certification from a trusted authority such as the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) preferred
  • 4+ years of experience in data privacy, consumer protection, or tech, preferably including 1+ years of in-house privacy experience
  • Experience with and knowledge of key privacy laws, such as GDPR, CCPA, and COPPA
  • Passion for data privacy, technology, and consumer protection
  • Technical knowledge and the ability to identify information management processes and map data flows
  • Ability to see and respond to both end-user perspectives and internal stakeholder perspectives
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to describe complex privacy concepts and practices in simple terms while maintaining precision
  • Ability to condense complex information into an easily understood format, using both written and visual elements
  • Ability to communicate clearly to stakeholders regarding privacy practices and requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and the highest level of discretion

  • Comfort working collaboratively with legal and business stakeholders
