Our client, a publicly traded and high profile software company is beginning its succession planning process for its next top legal executive. This executive is viewed as an integral member of the Company’s core management team. The attorney in this role is also considered a highly valued business partner and reports directly to the CEO, with close interactions with other top level executives and the Board of Directors.
The Chief Legal Officer in the organization is currently responsible for all legal affairs of the Company and provides the highest quality legal counsel to the CEO, Board of Directors and other senior management. The CLO serves as a strategic business partner who collaborates with other senior leaders to accelerate the growth and evolution of the Company.
As the executives plan the succession, they are prioritizing characteristics they find important to success: Like superb interpersonal skills, the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse professional backgrounds in a fast-paced environment, and strong business acumen with the ability to translate difficult legal principles into practical and effective business solutions – quickly and decisively. Other virtues include prior General Counsel experience (public company preferred, but not required if public company experience at a higher level in another company), strong commercial experience, management experience, confidence and security in one’s ability and being.
